Phoretic Motions of Colloidal Particles and Electrokinetic Phenomena
Colloidal particles can be driven to move by the application of a non-uniform field (such as temperature, solute concentration, electric potential, etc.) that interacts with the interfacial region at the surface of each particle. These phenomena are known as ”phoretic motions”, which include electrophoresis (or relatively, electro-osmosis of ionic fluids) and diffusiophoresis of charged particles, thermocapillary motion of fluid droplets, thermophoresis of aerosol particles, and osmophoresis of semi-permeable vesicles. Theoretical studies of the particle-particle and particle-wall interactions in various phoretic motions and of electrokinetic phenomena in suspensions and porous media are currently under way. Applications of this work are found in colloidal transport, characterization, and separation, microfluidics and nanofluidics, processing of materials, and motility of biological cells.
